October 7th Meeting
We enjoyed a good meeting at the Coffee House in Henderson last night. Seven reader's shared their work, I won a book from our weekly book drawing (yippee!). We also had a nice discussion about crutch words. Everyone has mental “umm” words that crop up repeatedly in their writing, ones that aren't needed to convey meaning. Darrah shared how he recently cut out over 3,000 words from his 77,000 word manuscript by doing word searches for passive voice and crutch words.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
The screenwriter's meeting this last Wednesday was a success. Seven people attended, scripts were shared and critiqued and all who attended enjoyed a great discussion.
The officer's meeting is this Thursday. Anyone can attend, if interested. Email an officer in the group if you'd like to attend, or if you have something you'd like to discuss at the meeting.
Pen and Grill is this Wednesday (that's tomorrow) at Big Dogs at Sahara. See the website for more information. The Poetry group meets next week at Skinny Dugans. Email Gregory at gregory [at] kompes [dot] com if you'd like to read.
Thanks for reading.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT:
WRITING TIP from Jo Wilkins:
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT:
“Whether you like it or not, I'm keeping that title.”
WRITING TIP from Jo Wilkins:
Interview the editors you consider, ask for references from each, and have them do sample pages for you before you hand over (or pay for) the entire manuscript for editing. There is nothing worse than paying for something that does not rise to your standards, or that the editor cannot work with. The types of editors are content, copy, proofers, and substantive editors. Know what each does and which you need before you seek out an editor.
