A Place of Our Own

In 2003, my husband and I sold our family home and moved to Henderson. Free from obligation and distraction, I set up a home office and dove headfirst into my writing career. A few months later, my husband returned to his old job two states away, our daughter moved out to begin her adult life and I had to put our last family pet to sleep.

Empty nest didn’t come close to describing this new chapter in my life. I hadn’t taken the time to meet anyone and was completely alone in an unfamiliar place learning an uncertain craft. Then I found Henderson Writers Group.

At the time, their meetings were held at the Paseo Verde Library and attended by a few members. Through the years, the group has changed and grown. Having received so many benefits by joining HWG, I’ve also grown. I joined as a shy writer experiencing anxiety attacks. I attended my last meeting equipped with confidence and skill.

On one election day, after serving as interim secretary and interim conference chairperson—contacting casinos for bids and settling on Sam’s Town—I handed over my minutes and bid packets to the new secretary. In return, I gained self-confidence. I found my first editor through the group and the courage to share my writing with others by asking another member to read for me. The last meeting I attended at Saxby’s, I was encouraged to read for myself.

Over the years members have published numerous books and held many workshops and book signings. Under the nurturing leadership of Jo Wilkins, HWG is all grown up now. There are so many local activities and new faces, it’s difficult belonging long distance. But I credit the group for giving me a solid foundation, lasting friendships and thanks to the Internet, I’ll always lend my support by keeping current membership.
