I want to extend a huge Thank You to Jo Wilkins, president and founder of Henderson Writers' Group for her years of service and leadership, as well as a warm welcome to Gregory Kompes, who will assume the role of HWG president this June.
We had a very informative discussion about writing bios and platforms. Next week we'll be reading and discussing writing synopses.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Amanda is still accepting books for the raffle. We're putting together a collection of books published by members of the Henderson Writer's Group. If you have something to contribute, please do!
From Jo Wilkins:
"For those of you in the HWG who knew her, it is my sad duty to let you know that Kathy Harrington passed away last week. She was not only a noted speech therapist in great demand, she was and a good writer and a dear friend. Among her accomplishments were her two books on speech therapy, I Never Told My Son He Couldn’t Dance, Tears of Laughter—Tears of Pain and Bayo the Boo Cow, through Ink & Quill, the books that launched our company. She also had a fiction book To Dance With Fireflies from Willow Moon Publishers. She did outstanding work with Autistic children & adults, and had the knack of putting everyone at ease just being around her. She will be missed by many.
A celebration of Kathie's life will be held on April 19, 2013, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, NV."
BRAGS:
Congratulations to Gregory Kompes on his trip to walk across Spain this summer.
Congratulations to Kathleen Mosko on being invited to sing with her choral group at Carnegie Hall.
UPCOMING MEETINGS:
The Westside meeting is tomorrow, March 27th. The next weekly meeting is next Monday at 6:30 at The Coffee House in Henderson. The address is 117 S. Water Street. We are going to try it out and see what we think. If anyone knows of a good Henderson meeting location let us know. For more information about our meetings see the calendar at the end of this post.
QUOTES OF THE NIGHT:
WRITING TIP from President Jo Wilkins:
DID YOU KNOW?
Our group frequently gets emails from other writers' groups, conferences, and contests. Would you like to do more to learn your craft, or publicize your book?
Here is information about a local poetry reading, book signing, writing contests, and writing workshop. And if you have science fiction, fantasy, or historical fiction of course you should keep HWG member Martin Greening's magazine Azure Keep Quarterly in mind.
April is National Poetry Month. The Senior's Center at Henderson has an “open mic” event coming up. They are inviting local authors to share their poetry. If you write poetry you should check it out! Here's the more official blurb:
"We want to advertise the event as “April is National Poetry Month” and Heritage Park Senior Facility will be sponsoring an “Open Mic Poetry Reading” and “Meet and Greet” interaction with local published poets on Friday, April 26, 2 – 4pm. Poets who participate may bring poetry books to autograph and sell that afternoon. I am requesting that the Auxiliary purchase some of the books to be given to our Henderson Library in Heritage Park. So if anyone is interested in selling us a book, tell me how we can make the purchase. I also want to be permitted to take pictures of the poets that afternoon for a story to go to our Mayor, City Council members and City of Henderson employees. "
If you are interested in participating in the May 7 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) River Writers Group book signing, please read the following press release and contact Jack McGuire (mcguirejack155@gmail.com) or Sylvia Bisnar (Slybiz@aol.com) AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
"Attention all writers willing to promote and sell their books or novels at our May 7, 2013 writers group book signing: Speaking from my experience at another joint book signing, the writers who were most successful were the ones who displayed either a standing poster next to their individual tables or a poster sitting on their table. Each writer will have a table assigned to them at the library. The tables will be spaced throughout the library. The idea is to leave enough room for each writer to answer questions and advertise their books to potential buyers.
There will be refreshments set off to the side somewhere, separate from the book signing.
If you plan to participate, please submit to Jack or Sylvia a short bio and a 'tease' of your book ASAP to provide to the media to advertise the upcoming event."

Blah.
"I'm going to call a psychiatrist right now."
"I agree with him and I also have masters in literature."
WRITING TIP from President Jo Wilkins:
Grammar – Yes, we should use an industry editor to polish our work. But if we truly want to thrill the public with our writing, we must know how to put it together. LEARN YOUR CRAFT is not just a saying. If we want to say something important, a lack of knowing basic punctuation or word usage can turn a sentence into something slightly different than you intend. Even a good editor can’t read our minds seeing what we meant to say, and may edit our prose in the wrong direction. Then, the reader won’t have a chance to see our story the way we wanted it presented.
