April 29th Meeting Report

About thirty gathered last night at the Coffee House to hear and critique six readers. Don't forget that next week we will return to the Coffee House for our weekly meeting.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The first Nevada State College Film Festival is scheduled for Thursday, May 9th, at 7 PM in the great hall of the Dawson Building, located at 1125 Nevada State Drive, Henderson 89002.  One of the featured films stars several members of the group, and includes a song inspired by Donald Riggio's book Seven Inch Vinyl.

UPCOMING MEETINGS:

Next Monday we will be meeting in Henderson at the Coffee House.  We normally alternate between Vegas and Henderson, but since yesterday was a fifth Monday we will meet at the Coffee House twice in a row.

BRAGS:

Congratulations to Darlien Breeze on her nifty videos about her book and a cool new business card.
Congratulations to Nancy Sansone on her Nevada women's group book being out and for sale.
Congratulations to Henry Schmidt on his two twin great granddaughters who live out of state and are growing well. (And also very cute- he brought pictures to show.)

WRITING TIP from Jo Wilkins:

Research is a necessity. The “writing what you know” advice doesn’t just cover what you actually know; it covers what you set out to learn about for your proposed storyline. Any author can write about any subject after doing enough research to make the story feel real. I write futuristic stories 200 to 300 years in the future. Without research on where scientific advances can take us, I couldn’t write my stories. Write about the past, present, or write about the future, but write it with a note of reality.

ABOUT THAT RAFFLE:

The Student Scholarship Raffle at the 2013 Las Vegas Writers Conference was a great success. Attendees praised the variety of items up for raffle (40 items in all) and bought hundreds of tickets over the course of the weekend.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the raffle and donated prizes. I am touched by everyone’s generosity and proud to be a member a group so committed to promoting writing and scholarship among our youth. A special thank you to Ariel Belanger, my indefatigable helper, and once again to everyone who contributed, including:
