July 8th Meeting Report

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The officers of the group met last night and we had an exciting discussion about upcoming events for the group. There are some really cool things around the corner. I'm not going to announce them here though, you'll need to come to the next meeting to find out!

Dues are coming up August 1st. The cost of joining the Henderson Writer's Group is $40 per year, and if you are a member you can read and get critiqued at our weekly meetings. You also get a discount at the Las Vegas Writer's Conference.


BRAGS:

Congratulations to Amanda Skenadore on meeting with a specialist in the Indian language of Ojibwe who looked over all the Ojibwe phrases in her historical fiction novel, checking them for accuracy and offering suggestions.

WRITING TIP by Jo Wilkins:

If you have a problem fleshing out an idea or a character, the technique of clustering (or bubble method, or mind mapping) can help you see what you have already developed and add to it. Seeing the information on paper can help you identify what’s missing. 

Start by writing your central idea or character and drawing a circle around it. Draw lines out and begin brainstorming, writing down subtopics, connections, aspects of your character etc. This article by Eva Shaw (who taught this technique at our 2006 conference) tells more about the bubble method.

Writers Pen and Grill is tonight, Wednesday July 10th, with the coloring for chemo fundraiser, at 6:30 p.m. at PTs grill. Our next weekly meeting is at the Coffee House in Henderson on July 15th. See the calendar for more information on July's meetings.
