August 26th Meeting Report

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

We had a great meeting this Monday at the Lutheran Church. I enjoyed our informal discussion about "post-publishing letdown." Several members shared tips about marketing and the benefit of nurturing multiple ideas at the same time. It was also nice to hear that it's a common phenomenon to have this struggle after finishing a project.

At our Monday meeting we drew names from those who have paid dues, and the lucky winners of a workshop critique are:
Donald Riggio
Gale Nathan
Dorlon Pond
Gigi Honour
Congratulations to everyone who won! Our workshop critique will take place on September 23rd (the fourth Monday) at the Lutheran church, in the downstairs room.

Our wonderful board member Jay Yarbrough has resigned from his position as Vice President of Henderson Writer's Group. He is resigning in order to focus on his writing and other projects, but will continue to be an active member of the group. The HWG board and membership with to express their sincere thanks for his years of service and leadership. Thank you Jay!

Angelina Hill is going to be serving as the new Vice President, which leaves the position of Publicity Chairperson open. If you are interested in serving as publicity officer, please contact Gregory.

Next week we have a speaker at our meeting: Hope Clark.

The 2014 writers conference is coming together very nicely. We have 5 agents, 2 editors, 5 authors, 1 screenwriter, and 1 publicist coming, as well as a couple publishers. It's a great line up of people. If you're interested in attending you can sign up on the website (which will soon be redone), or talk to one of the officers at a meeting.

BRAGS:

Congratulations to Donald Riggio on a great response to his interview with Fran Lewis (she's invited him to be on a new Ezine!) and an upcoming interview that will air several times next month. Check the HWG facebook page for details.

Congratulations to Charles Fuller on his letter of condolence being used as a eulogy.

Congratulations to Jo Wilkins on a great recovery from knee surgery. She's walking without assistance and soon to be out of physical therapy.

Congratulations to Fred Rayworth on getting a request to do a review of a book on Amazon.

Congratulations to Nancy Sansone on a good review of her book.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT:

There were so many to choose from this night! I was tempted to ask Paul Atreides if I could include his entire reading for the quote of the night- it was so good. But in the end I settled on the quote that everyone got to take home (literally, Bonnie made copies of this little gem and passed them around):

"Before you are enlightened, chop wood, carry water.
After you are enlightened, chop wood, carry water."
-Pantangali

WRITING TIP from Jo Wilkins:

Point of View (POV), I know that some in the HWG disagree with me, but without exception, all the agents and publishers that have attended our conferences agree that a fixed point of view is necessary for a saleable book. They all felt that for fiction, they would not accept a manuscript that head–hopped and did not have one person (per scene or chapter) showing the story to the reader.
