September 9th Meeting Report

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The Las Vegas Book fair is coming up the end of October (the last Saturday, I believe). If you would like to volunteer at the book, please contact Gregory. We could use volunteers! If you want to display your book(s) at our book, also contact Gregory.

There is an officer meeting this Thursday (tomorrow). Email a member of the board if you have something you'd like to bring up.

We'll be doing some fun things on the fifth Mondays. This 5th Monday is a first chapter read. If you have a new book, one that you haven't read to the group before, get on the list for September 30th and bring your first 8 to 10 pages (whatever you can read in 10 minutes).

We will have a poetry group and a screenwriters group that will start meeting soon. Stay tuned for more details.

WRITING TIP from Jo Wilkins:

"THEN can be a word writers fall back on when they fail to write a transition. If Janice walks out the door, THEN she climbs the stairs, what happens in between the two actions. Using THEN lets the lazy writer leave out a transition between the character’s actions. Are the stairs directly outside Janice’s front door? Could she go anywhere else but up the stairs when leaving her apartment? Writing the character did this, then they did that, misses the opportunity to show where the characters move, or what emotions the character(s) have about the actions they take."
