June 10th Meeting Report

About 32 of us gathered at the church this Monday to listen to a presentation from Judge Diane Steel and to hear and critique four writers. Judge Steel gave an informative and interesting presentation. It was a great view into issues relating to family court. She also took questions relating to legal matters.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT:

“He said 'All rise' and both of them did.”

WRITING TIP from Jo Wilkins:

If you take the time to notice, most established authors don’t fall back on using the word "as" to connect their thoughts & movements. If you find yourself using "as" to say things like, "he confessed to the murder as he walked her across the park", just split it into two sentences or rearrange the thought.
Example one: "Walking across the park he confessed to the murder."
Example two: "During their walk across the park he confessed to killing her brother."
Remember, in a complete scene, you can show the interaction much better. Don’t weaken your prose by connecting action, feeling, or dialogue with an "as."

UPCOMING MEETINGS:

Next Monday, June 17th, we'll meet at the coffee shop to hear from videographer Jonathan Morgan Jenkins will be speaking at the Monday meeting.

Visit the library for a workshop with Nicole McInnes, author of the YS novel Brianna on the Brink, Roger DeBlanck, author of the historical novel The Ramos Brothers Trust Castro and Kennedy, and Jonathan Sturak, author of the psychological thriller A Smudge of Gray.
