June 24th Meeting Report

About 30 people gathered at the Lutheran church last night to hear and critique six readers. Here's a snapshot of our meeting in blog form:

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

A hearty welcome to our new president, Gregory Kompes. He returned from Spain this week. If you would like to read at one of the Monday meetings, please email Gregory at gregory [at] kompes [dot] com.

The Henderson Writer's Group will have a booth at the Vegas Valley Book Fair this November. If you would like to reserve a space as an individual author, you need to do so by July 1st. Email Jay at jyarbrough7 at cox dot net if you'd like more information.

Writer's Pen and Grill is having a fundraiser for Coloring through Chemo. It's July 10th at PTs on Buffalo at 6:30. You can bring coloring books and crayons or donate cash.

Audrey Balzart's two films from the Nevada State College film festival will be showing at the Las Vegas Film Festival at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 18th, at the LVH.

BRAGS:

Congratulations to Darlien Breeze on receiving her very first royalty check from the United Kingdom branch of Amazon. She is now officially an international author!

Congratulations to Morgan St. James on her upcoming book La Bella Mafia. Pre-sale and publication dates have been set. It will be out October 30th of this year.

WRITING TIP from Jo Wilkins:

"If you experience problems with pacing, try alternating your scenes. If your first scene is an action scene, the next one should let the reader relax. Although, even in the scenes where you allow them to relax, you should trigger some tension to keep the reader interested."

UPCOMING MEETINGS:

The Westside meeting is tomorrow night, June 26th at 6:30 p.m.

Next Monday's meeting is at the Coffee House in Henderson. It starts at 6:30 p.m. but if you'd like to get a good seat and a drink or bite to eat, come early. We wrap up at 8:30 p.m.
