June 3rd Meeting Report

We enjoyed a full meeting last night at the Coffee House. Nearly every chair was full and we heard and critiqued six writers.

BRAGS:

Congratulations to Audrey Balzart on her films from the Nevada State College Film Festival being featured in the Las Vegas Film Festival (Held this July 18-21).

Congratulations to Fred Rayworth on the publication of an article about astronomy in Reflector Magazine.

Congratulations to Barbara Muchow on her son's script. It won first place in a Nevada script-writing competition in 2011 and is currently being sent around Hollywood by an agent.

Congratulations to Martin Greening on being in Orson Scott Card's Literary Boot Camp this July.

Congratulations to Jay Yarbrough on receiving a request from an agent to see his full movie script.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT:

"I'd rather write two novels than a synopsis."

WRITING TIP from Jo Wilkins:

Repetition is a story killing habit.
Yes, a streetlight is a streetlight is a streetlight. But, if your character looks out the window to see a man standing under the streetlight, and she sees his sinister expression illuminated in the light from the streetlight, will she stay inside and away from the danger until the streetlight goes out?
Don’t laugh; I have edited this type of paragraph. Be leery of repetition.

UPCOMING MEETINGS: We have some speakers scheduled during our upcoming meetings.
Next week, June 10th, Judge Diane Steel will be speaking at our Monday meeting at the Lutheran Church. She will present information relavent to writing about legal matters, and then be open for questions and discussion. If you have any legal scenes in your book, this would be a great opportunity to get some expert opinion on them!

On June 17th Videographer Jonathan Morgan Jenkins will be speaking at the Monday meeting. Here is a picture and bio to give you an idea of his expertise:

Jonathan Morgan Jenkins began his passion for filmmaking after creating, shooting and editing projects produced in his Cinema class in High School.

He continued to shoot consumer and semi-professional for many years until he eventually opened his Video Production business in 2006. The timing was right as Google had just purchased YouTube and he immediately began posting video content to market clients.

Currently Performance Production Services focuses on producing professional video content for Online Video Production, Family Events, Corporate Events, Seminars, Training Videos, Non-Profits and Documentaries.

Jonathan is also a published author in the filed of Vocal Training and has also written 6 screenplays.

“I look forward to helping authors in Las Vegas understand how powerful Video Marketing is, and how it will help them promote their writings.”

  1. Thanks for publishing that list. However they are not websites...they are Facebook Groups or pages.
