August 5th Meeting Report

It's August! That means that dues are due.

It costs $40 per year to be a member of Henderson Writer's Group. Members can read at our weekly meetings and receive feedback from the group. Members also get a discount at our annual Las Vegas Writer's Conference.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

If you pay your dues by next week (You can pay at the group website here, or bring check or cash to the meeting next Monday) then you will be entered in a drawing for a workshop spot at our August 26th Meeting. At our August 26th meeting we'll have just four readers, each reader will read 8 to 10 pages (double spaced 12 point font, of course), and then we'll have up to twenty minutes of critique time instead of the usual five minutes.

Three members of our group are facing some health challenges right now: Bonnie Apple, Judy Logan, and Jo Wilkins, who is recuperating from surgery. We hope they'll all be able to join our meetings again soon. In the meantime, if you have a moment, drop them a card or send an email wishing them well.

If you'd like to donate a prize for the book giveaway that Gregory has been doing at our meetings (Not your own novel), let Gregory know. This week Donald Riggio won a copy of "The Writer's Companion."

BRAGS:
No brags this week.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT:

"Most writers understand the need for a limp in the hero's walk."
-Bill Wallace

WRITING TIP from Jo Wilkins:

Where does your story take place? Making the most of the location where your characters meet their challenges can be as important as your supporting characters. The setting where they conquer their fears and reach their ultimate goal can make or break a story.
What would "Gone With the Wind" be without Tara? That plantation defined Scarlett’s arrogance, and ultimately her defiance against her environment. And, think about it, could Poe have inspired such horror in his readers without the house the Ushers lived in?
